Clee Cottage
A 2.6-metre galley in Clay 210, with brass fittings over a terracotta floor. The smallest kitchen we fitted last year and one of the best.
The room
Two facing runs 1.1 metres apart in a stone cottage, which is the minimum gap two people can pass in and the reason a galley works here and an island never could. Total cabinetry: 2.6 metres. The budget was a third of the average job on this page and it is the kitchen visitors to the Ludlow showroom ask about most.
Clay 210 is a muted pink that reads as a warm grey in low light, and against the original terracotta floor it is the only colour we tried that did not argue with the tiles. We took three sample doors and the client rejected two.
Iroko rather than oak for the worktop: it is harder, it darkens rather than greys, and on a 600mm run either side of a sink it will take the water better. It wants oiling twice a year, which we tell people at the quote rather than in the handover pack.

Honestly
What we would change: we fitted a full-height larder at the end of one run and it makes the room feel shorter. A pair of tall drawers would have kept the sightline and held nearly as much.
