The room
The client was living in the house with no second kitchen, so the job was phased: the perimeter run first with the old sink kept live, then the island, then the appliances. Eight working days spread across three weeks, which costs more in travel and is the difference between a client who enjoys the process and one who eats takeaway for a fortnight.
Walnut on the island against Chalk 002 is a warmer pairing than oak and considerably less common. At 50mm it has enough presence to be the focal point in a room where nothing else is dark. It is oiled, not lacquered, so it can be sanded back if it is ever damaged — a lacquered top cannot be repaired locally.
Three pendants over a 2.4-metre island, at 750mm above the top and 800mm apart, which we set out on the floor with the client standing at the island rather than deciding it on a drawing. Pendant height is the single detail most often got wrong and it takes ten minutes to get right in the room.

Honestly
What we would change: phasing the work meant the island was templated before the perimeter quartz, and the two worktops meet at a 4mm level difference at one end. It is invisible unless you run a hand across it, and we know it is there.
