The room
A Georgian rectory where the kitchen has a 2.4-metre sash window on the north wall and very little else going for it. Chalk 002 is close to the original lime plaster colour we found under three layers of woodchip in the pantry, which is where the palette came from.
Honed Carrara, and we said what we say to everyone who asks for marble: it will stain. Lemon, red wine and olive oil will all leave a mark, honing hides scratches but not etching, and no sealer changes that. The client has three young children and chose it anyway, with their eyes open, and it looks exactly as good as marble looks.
The four glazed cabinets are the detail that took the negotiation. Glazed doors mean the contents are on display permanently, and half the people who ask for them are imagining a styled shelf rather than their actual crockery. We fitted them to the two cabinets either side of the window and left the rest solid, which is the compromise we usually land on.

Honestly
What we would change: the marble was templated before the floor was levelled, so the fitters lost half a day packing the base units. On an old floor, template after levelling — it is our error and it recurs often enough that it is now on the checklist.
